Lately in class we have been talking about the Bill of Rights and the freedom of speech. My classmates have been saying that they can say anything they want and there will be no consequences. So my favorite teacher tells them all the time that with freedom of speech comes freedom of consequence. That gave me an idea! I didn't know what what I wanted to do so I decided I wanted to talk first amendment rights. So I found nine words that the declaration does not protect. They do not protect obscenity. Also it does not protect fighting words or even defamation. It does not and will never ever protect child pornography or perjury black mail. The declaration will also not protect incitement to imminent lawless action or even true threats and even solicitations to commit crimes. I got these nine things that the First Amendment will not protect from Freedom Forum Institute. I agree that there should be limits on the things that we can say. If we don't, would we just let people get away with death threats and other inappropriate speech? Even in the classroom, people say things that are NOT ok. I think what my teacher means by "freedom of consequence" is that you could use your freedom of speech to say anything you want, but you better be ready for the consequences. You could get arrested, lose people's respect, and people might not want to be around you. Not all consequences mean jail time. Life would be a lot more difficult if people think you are rude and disrespectful. So use your freedom for good, not for evil!!

I became really interested in snakes when I was little. My Mom didn't like them, but I used to think they were really cool! I even chased her around with a little gardener snake one time. That got me thinking about my favorite snake, the pit viper. I decided to do some research on livescience.com and animalplanet.com and found a ton of cool facts. Take a look! - I've always thought their heads were weirdly shaped. That's because they have to fit two large venom glands in their mouth. - They're not the biggest snakes. They've got short and stocky tails unlike a python. Usually they're about 3-5 feet long. - Pit Vipers are considered a sub-family of the Viperidae family. - They like to hide in trees to ambush their prey. They prefer being on land but can go in water if they need to get away from predators like birds. - Pit vipers can be found on every continent, except Antarctica because it's way too cold for reptiles!
- They have big fangs that can come out together or one at a time. It depends on how small their prey is. - The best way to spot a pit viper is to look for a hole under each eye. - Some people call them "copperheads," but that's a non-scientific name for a pit viper. If you're under the age of 20, you've probably played Minecraft before. I've always played it for fun but recently I've thought that there might be more to it than just fun. I've seen all kinds of new products coming out too, so I decided to do some research to find out what makes Minecraft educational. I found some good information on idtech.com, so here are some things I found out: -The game Minecraft gives kids creativity by using all kinds of supplies to build houses farms and any possible thing that your kid wants to build. Kids may think its fun but what they don't realize is that they are using math at the same time but ill bring up math again towards the end. -Its also shows real world skills. For example kids playing Minecraft can learn how to survive in the real world with only certain materials in the woods. - The Oregon trail will very much let students from all over the world take a trip across the whole North America in the game Minecraft with the Oregon trail update to learn about wonders around the world. The new update for Minecraft was a very smart idea for kids all over the world this is an intelligent idea that probably works for most kids out there. - In my school, we use code.org. I've done some Minecraft programming on it which means they teamed up to help kids learn programming! - Minecraft: Education Edition came out recently, which has a Code Builder option in it. That way kids can explore and make their own computer code for Minecraft maps and characters! -Schools all around the world will be able get minecraft code edition for students for free. - Kids these days are playing Minecraft on Xbox but what they don't know is that if they playing multiplayer it's very helpful for problem solving and team work. - OK time to talk about math again! Math is a huge thing in the game minecraft also because kids are dividing supplies equally among different players. - History is another one like for example when kids get a closer look at these building and by looking at them they can develop a greater understanding of the architecture. Overall, I think that Minecraft is very helpful for kids, and I encourage others to try it!
When my teacher told me that The United States pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement, I was pretty upset! I also started thinking about cool new ways that we can help our environment, and I found some interesting stuff on living walls and roofs. Cities and businesses all over the world are installing them. One of the easiest ways to decrease pollution is to plant more rooted organisms like trees and flowers. They lower the amount of carbon dioxide and create more oxygen. personally, I really like oxygen because I need it to live!!! Here is a meme I made, along with some more info: -Faster growing plants absorb more CO2 and create more O2, which means they're better for cities. -"Hyper-accumulators" also absorb metals and other pollution from the soil! Many types of grass and some weeds (like the sunflower) are considered hyper-accumulators. -Green walls and roofs have many benefits. They can insulate buildings which saves on heating and cooling costs. They look beautiful. And they can reduce overall temperatures by 9 degrees Fahrenheit! (Source: bestsociologyprograms.com) -Living walls and roofs are being built all over the world! The slideshow above shows three good examples from around the world. This is one artists' idea for how Paris could look like a green city! I think we
pollute too much. I think living walls are cool because living walls reduce pollution. This is my business profile of Dean Kamen. Mr. Kamen is an inventor, engineer an entrepreneur who has made some amazing things. He was born on April 5, 1951 in New York, and at the age of 66 he's worth 500 million dollars! I think it's really cool that most of Kamen's inventions are things that really help people. Here are some of the coolest things he's made: SEGWAY Segway was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Bed ford, NH. The Segway was a really unique invention at the time and was designed to help people who couldn't move around as easily (or for people who are just lazy). I think segway should make a contraption for babies. It would help babies move around easier and in a safer way when they're really young. LUKE ARM - PROSTHETIC LIMBS In my research I found out that people who have lost limbs say Kamen's prosthetic arm feels like their own arm! This is really cool because it can help soldiers who have lost limbs in war. It can also help people who lost limbs from disease or other accidents. The first Luke Arm read tiny signals from your muscles and was able to move based on those. Now it looks like Dean Kamen is trying to connect the limbs directly to your brain! ADVANCED WHEELCHAIR Dean Kamen also designed a wheelchair with an adjustable height that can go up and down stairs! The wheelchair allows users to do the little things that they weren't able to do before, like getting into the freezer for a snack. The stair climbing ability also makes transportation a lot easier for users. SLINGSHOT WATER FILTRATION
The slingshot can purify dirty water, and Dean Kamen is using his invention to help people all over the world! It uses water vapor and can operate using cow poop! The name slingshot refers to the one David used to defeat Goliath. This is an invention that could really help save lives and change the world. There are still so many people out there without access to clean water! The ghost shark, or Hydrolagus Africanus, is a pretty cool creature. I did some research about them on theinertia.com and found out a bunch of cool things:
-A new species of 'buck toothed' ghost shark was just discovered. It was the 50th species of ghost shark discovered and is bigger than the normal ghost shark. -Ghost sharks have been around since before dinosaurs! -Ghost sharks live between South Africa and Antarctica. -Ghost sharks aren't really sharks at all! They're distant relatives of rays. I think that these are funny looking for sure, but they're also really cool. I think it's amazing that they've survived for longer than the dinosaurs. These animals are hard to find too, so I like that we're learning more about them every day! Welcome to the Environment Section! Global warming has been concerning scientists for decades, and now more and more scientists agree that climate change is real and dangerous. From plastic pollution to cow farts to vehicle emissions, there are many things affecting our degrading atmosphere. The Earth has been around for much longer than humans, yet we are killing our planet. The good news is that some people have devoted their lives to helping with this problem. Without people trying to save the environment, our earth will continue to die quickly. Here's a quote from leading Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson: "We just cant seem to stop burning up all those buried trees from way back in the carboniferous age, in the form of coal, and the remains of ancient plankton, in the form of oil and gas. If we could we'd be home free from climate change. Instead we're dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a rate the earth hasn't seen since the great climate catastrophes of the past, the ones that led to mans extinction. We just cant seem to break our addiction to the kinds of fuel that will bring back a climate last seen by the dinosaurs, a climate that will drown our coastal cites and wreak havoc on the environment and our ability to feed our selves. All the while the glorious sun pours immaculate free energy down upon us more than we will ever need. Why can't we summon the ingenuity and courage of the generation that came before us? The dinosaurs didn't see that asteroid coming. What's our excuse?"
Here in the Environment Section of Generation NEWS, we will discuss the problems facing our planet and highlighting solutions to the problems. Stay tuned for more! |
